pictures]Plate 15 offers the following for consideration: 1) a pope holding the 'keys to kingdom' 2) a butcher knife in his right hand 3) a dog or wolf demanding the keys 4) a king's crown laying at his feet It appears that this pope is ready to
carve up the kingdom, while at the same time the wolf/dog wants the
keys to the kingdom.
This pope is Nicholas V, who crowned [King] Frederick III emperor at Rome in 1452. The wolf is antepope Felex V. Felix clung to his title several years but finally submitted in 1449 to Nicolas V. |
