PAGE 1 Records of the Church of Christ in Salem the first Church in sd. town with some places adjacent. As this people blonged not to any presbeterry or association it was agreed by sd. Society that the comitt. of sd. Society with the candidate then on Probation viz. Mr. Solom. Mead Jointly should send for some of the neighboring ministers to perform the work of authorizing of him the sd. Mr. Mead and invest him with the ministerial charge over them. The ministers sent for were those that follow (viz) Revd Missrs: Abraham Todd - Elisha Kent - William Gaylord - Jonath Ingersol - Robert Silliman - & Samuel Sacke, which convocation was agreed to be called on May the 20, 1752. Accordingly on the 19th met those that are sat down in the convention which I transcribe from the doings of the sd. convention & is as followeth: At a Convention of ministers at Salem on the 19 of May Anno Domini 1752 met upon the Dessire of the People of Salem & places adjacent in Conjunction with Mr. Solom. Mead a candidate for the Gospel Ministry in order to ordain the sd. Mr. Mead a Gospel Minister among or over sd people. Present of the Revd Missrs, sent for Abraham Todd - Johnath Ingersol & Samuel Sacket. Mr. Todd chosen moderator, PAGE 2 Mr. Ingersol scribe. The meeting opened by Prayer Performed by the moderator the Revd Mr. James Davenport being present was voted in as member of the Convention. Proceeded on Mr. Mead's tryals examined him in the Languages in his experimental acquaintance with Religion his Doctrinal knowledge of Divinity & his orthodoxy. Then meeting adjorned till tomorrow morning met according to adjournment. Mr. Mead presented and read a Sermon to the Convention & upon a deliberate consideration unanimously agreed & vote to proceed in the ordination of Mr. Mead. Voted that Mr. Ingersol make the first prayer & give the right hand of fellowship that Mr. Todd should preach that Mr. Sacket make the ordination prayer that Mr. Kent give the charge & that Mr. Davenport conclude with prayer & a word of exhortation. At which time a church was gathered consisting of eighteen members (viz) Josiah Gilbert - Solomon Close - Stephen Brush - Jonah Keeler - Noah St. John - Daniel St. John - Nathan Northrup - Andrew Bishop - Ebenr. Scofield - John Bouton - Ebenr Grommond - Lot Keeler - Paul Keeler - Abraham Northrup - Benjn Bishop - & Elijah Keeler & the ordination performed accordingly. Test Jonath Ingersol Scribe PAGE 3 this was the first ordination in Salem & the first Church gathered in sd. town Solomon Mead. The first Sabbath after sd. ordination (viz) May the 24 I took a vote of the Chr: whether we should join with the Western Association in Fairfield County voted in the affirmative the whole Chr: except Nathan Northrup according I joined as a member of sd association on the next Tuesday viz the 26 of May there being an association of that county then sitting a consociation as yet not meeting the chr as yet have not joined but propose so to do as soon as opportunity does present. July 2, 1752 Voted our Brother Solomon Close be our deacon Voted our Brother John Bouton be our deacon also. September 14, 1752 New stile at a meeting of sd. Chh voted to contribute 4 pence a man + 3 pence a woman for the year insuing, also agreed on it by the desire of the Chh. to have the Sacrament administered once in two months. Several meetings not recorded. Sep 8, 1757 At a meeting of the Chh to hear reasons of Deacon Boutons resigning his office. After hearing and agreeing he had power to Lay Down. The Chh proceed to a new choice. Again make choice of the deacon. He desires 3 weeks from the Lords Day ensuing for consideration. The petition granted. The deacon accepts. Sep. 29, 1763 A meeting of the Chh. of Christ in Salem at the meeting house considered whether this Chh. would adopt the Presbyterian form of Chh. government. Voted in the affirmative. Agreed to choose 5 ruling elders that these should stand but for one year. Voted the following persons for the above term: 1. Deacon Solomon Close 2. Deacon John Bouton 3. Josiah Gilbert Esqr 4. Joseph Osburn 5. Thadeus Crane PAGE 9 Apr. 10, 1765 At meeting of Chh. in Salem voted to continue the same Elders as were above voted. nemine contradicente. Sep. 30, 1778 was elected Nathaniel Wicks, Deacon in the room of Deacon Close, deceased & the same Mr. Wicks elected elders. Joseph Benedict was chosen elder in room of Joseph Osborn, Deceased. May 28, 1782 Elected two elders Nathan Rockwell Esqr & Capt. Gold Bouton. Dec 3, 1782 Then met the sessions at my house to hear the request of Lieut Solomon Close who was by the congregational Church in upper Salelm excommunicated. Requesting that the sessions would meet at his house that he might have an opportunity of vindicating his innocence & that some ministers might be called in to join with the session the request was complied with & agreed to call in Messrs. Lewis of Wilton, Lewis & Mills belonging to the Presbytery and also to call all the members to the Chh. to hear & appointed the 9 of Jan. insuing Met Jan 7, 1783 according to appointment but of ministers only the Revd Mr. Lewis of Wilton attended & some papers of Mr. Closes were wanting. Therefore adjornment until Feb 11, ensuing. PAGE 10 Met according to adjornment & Messrs Lewis & Mill present. Mr. Lewis of Wilton did not attend. After collecting all evidence & hearing Mr. Closes full vindication nothing was scandalous proved against him but for some reasons did not come with a full determination until the ninth of March when he was received into the communion of the Church.
