The history of the hilton family goes back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon
culture of Britain. It is derived from the family living in the parish
of Hilton found in several locations including Derby, Dorset, Durham,
Stafford and the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Surname hilton is a
topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a
physical feature such as a hill. In this case the original bearers of
the surname hilton lived in the hill-town. Spelling variations include: Hilton, Hylton and others. First found in Durham where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Hugh Hilton settled in Virginia in 1619; a year before the "Mayflower"; Mary Hilton settled in Plymouth Mass. in 1623; William Hilton settled in Plymouth with his wife and two children in 1623.
